Warehouse Retailer Cuts Gate Processing Time

The Problem

This major retailer uses a dedicated trailer fleet for all its store deliveries from the warehouse. On the outbound side, the shipping office couldn’t confirm the driver took the right trailer without a person manually checking the trailer against the shipping logs. On the inbound side, employees had to engage the driver again to tell him where to park his empty trailer.

Solution Design

4SIGHT Yard has a robust gate component perfect for this customer’s needs. We affixed permanent RFID tags to the dedicated fleet trailers to identify each trailer. Once the trailer hits the RFID reader, the computer system confirms the right trailer is leaving the property. If everything is correct, the guard gate automatically opens while the driver is still moving. If something is wrong, the gate won’t open and an LED reader board by the gate alerts the driver to a problem and directs the driver to the shipping office. On the inbound side, RFID readers again identify which trailer has arrived back to the facility, and then the LED reader board tells the driver where to place the empty trailer.

5 mins
saved per trailer

Bottom Line

By automating the gate process, the customer saves up to 5 minutes per trailer on both the outbound and inbound sides. With 250+ trailers processed per day, that’s a huge labor savings. And they don’t send the wrong trailers out on delivery, improving internal customer service.
